LiveJournal Major Notes: Notes, Tweaks, Bug Kills, LJ_Cares!
[info]theljstaff wrote in [info]news

Notes augmented

We've enhanced and de-bugged Notes. If you haven't tried it yet, now's the time! You can create a private note when you ban multiple users. You can also delete multiple notes at once. Lastly, paid users have the option to add a note (visible only to you) whenever you add or remove a friend (guaranteed to avoid embarrassing social mishaps). If you don't currently have a paid account, you can upgrade now! It only takes a few minutes and costs less than a bad shopping mall haircut (plus, it's way more fashionable)!

Product tweaks and bug kill

  1. In another effort to zap spam, comments containing links from domains LiveJournal deems untrustworthy are now automatically screened

  2. If you sign up to get notifications of the Writer's Block question of the day, you'll now see the daily question in the email notification, so you'll have a little extra time to ponder before you post. You can subscribe to Writers Block notifications here

  3. The issue causing random comments to vanish has been fixed!

  4. If you visit a LiveJournal page and get prompted to log in, you'll be returned to the same page after you sign in (Thanks, Dreamwidth)!

  5. If you don't edit the timestamp for an entry at all, the entry timestamp will indicate the time the entry was posted instead of the time the Update Journal page was loaded

New FCK fixes rich text editor!

  1. We've updated our RTE (Rich Text Editor) to FCKeditor version 2.6.5 for improved visual design!

  2. When switching from the RTE to HTML editor, links for syndicated feeds are no longer broken

  3. RTE now functions properly in Safari 4.0

  4. An extra line/space will not be auto-inserted whenever you switch from RTE to HTML editor

  5. The insert image link now works correctly in all browsers

  6. Comments with paddings/backgrounds render correctly within the comment box (and will no longer wrap outside the box and break frames/margins)

LiveJournal Cares

We’re pleased to introduce you to [info]lj_cares, a new LiveJournal community dedicated to raising awareness and funds for U.S. charitable organizations that improve the health and well-being of people around the world. Each month, we’ll spotlight a nonprofit that is making a significant global impact through medical research, public outreach, and/or humanitarian social programs. Charities will be selected in accordance with the U.S. calendar of national health observances based on a high rating (of over 60%) on Charity Navigator and global scope of impact.

In this, our inaugural month of November, we will celebrate national adoption month by offering a charitable virtual gift (priced at $2.99) to support Love Without Boundaries, an organization that saves the lives of orphans with life-threatening diseases and places them in loving homes around the world. LiveJournal will donate 100% of the proceeds from the sale of charitable vgifts (we'll cover the cost of credit card transaction fees). To learn more about Love Without Boundaries, please visit [info]lj_cares and read about how they helped save Baby Kang and the Rainbow Twins from fatal illnesses, who are now thriving in nurturing families. You can purchase your Love Without Boundaries gifts in the Virtual Gift shop.

Papered in postcards

A couple of weeks ago, we asked you to send in postcards to surround us with LiveJournal community. Thanks for coming through! We've received postcards all the way from Germany, England, Finland, and Canada and from all over the US, including Texas, Florida, Alaska, Montana, Wyoming, Indiana, Hawaii, and Oklahoma just to name just a handful. We're thrilled with our improved decor.

Please keep the love coming for one more week by writing to Frank the Goat, Esq., c/o LiveJournal, Inc., 539 Bryant Street, Suite 210, San Francisco, CA 94107. Be sure to include your username, since we'll be drawing the names of ten random contributors next Thursday to win paid account credits!

Network Maintenance: Saturday, November 14, 2009 at 04:00-06:00 UTC/GMT
[info]dwell wrote in [info]lj_maintenance
On Saturday the 14th at 4AM UTC/GMT we will be upgrading the operating system of our network load balancers to a newer version, one that will allow us to use both CPUs! Nifty, because multiprocessing is nice.

Since we have 2 load balancers, the plan is to upgrade 1 at a time, and there really should be very little impact to our website. Hopefully you won't notice a thing and I'll get to go back to the hotel and watch some wonderful late night infomercials.

We've got a lot of exciting projects coming up for 2010 and we're hoping that we'll be able to deliver them all to you, that you will find it useful/cool/lovely and then you will use the site even more. Behind-the-scenes work like this will give us the capacity to handle the anticipated traffic, so expect a few more maintenance windows especially in the beginning of next year as we've got some neat ideas to improve performance around here! We had the recent 30-45 minute outage yesterday due to one of our logging databases filling up disk space -- not so great design coupled with my human error in handling the initial problem -- and it looks like we're going to finally have some resources to eliminate stuff like that. I can't wait!

As usual, I will be updating status.livejournal.org before and after, just in case you are not able to reach our main website during the work.

Weekly NaNo Update #1
[info]kay_brooke
It's been a week since NaNo started, so here is my weekly word count update (that I'm leaving open for everybody to see). NaNo has been going extremely well, even though I slacked off a lot this weekend. I didn't write at all on Saturday and not much today, but I was far enough ahead that it didn't really matter.

How far ahead, you ask?

25194 / 50000
(50.39%)

I'm now past the halfway point! Unfortunately, the reason I stopped there is because I don't really want to write the next scene, but it's necessary to get to the more exciting stuff (I told myself I would write linearly this year because jumping around all over the place was what killed my story last year).

Fandom fighting breast cancer
[info]sff_corgi wrote in [info]girlgenius_lab
I have a special offer to Girl Genius fandom — in Second Life, the Consulate of Europa Wulfenbach staff have, for the second year, organised and published a Shirtless calendar to raise funds for breastcancer.org. Now, the conversion rate between 'lindens' (the Second Life in-world currency) and U.S. dollars is roughly L$265/US$1, but that does not take away from the fact that a year of calendar and coffeetable book sales has raised over L$22,000 for the cause - and the new calendar has already raised over L$20,000!

You have an opportunity to participate this year without having to worry about making an account, or fussing with hardware minimums.

Sexy Jägerfemme luring you to donate )

The Shirtless Against Breast Cancer Cover-Jäger, Sgt. Birdsan Weezles-Timeless

These aren't just pretty pictures of half-dressed Jägers (and others) - these have a full range of religious, civil, astronomical and technological holidays and observances. All the eclipses are marked, too. Each page is 512x1024 pixels, 8-bit colour, JPG-format files.

This year, there are four editions of calendars:

Ladies

Gentlemen

Jägerkin

Fur & Fin

(Yes, I know a Jäger is also on the Ladies' calendar, but she was really appropriate.)

Anyone who donates to breastcancer.org (they take Visa Visa, Diner Club Diners Club, Discover Discover, American Express American Express, MasterCard MasterCard AND PayPal) will get an e-mailed receipt acknowledging your donation (any donation worth bothering with will be equivalent to the purchase price in Second Life). E-mail your receipt to sff dot corgi at gmail dot com with any secure information removed, but with the headers retained, and you will receive the calendar of your choice, all twelve pages, zipped into one file for easy handling. Anyone who donates in the double-digits, U.S. currency, will get the whole set of four calendars.

And you'll never know who you'll find with their shirt off in these things....

NaNoWriMo Day #6
[info]cherith wrote in [info]creativefantasy
Hey [info]creativefantasy NaNoers. How's the week treating you so far? Are you on target? Over? Under? If you're still under the daily word count (like me - I've got 700 words to make today's count) do not despair. Don't give up. Keep writing, you still have the whole month to make up what you need to. If you're ahead, good for you, keep writing!!

This is your chance to check in with us, let us know how you're doing and complain about it all if necessary. After all it's not really NaNo if you're not complaining about something.

I also come bearing some NaNo Gifts. Check out the NaNo Motivator at Chaotic Shiny. (If you write 341 more words there might be cupcakes later!)

Looking for ways to incorporate NaNoWriMo into your novel? Figure out what else you can spell with those letters. Maybe Ian Woon or Naomi Worm needs to make an appearance in your story!

And if you need to boost word count, try killing someone!! NaNoers prefer the Travelling Shovel of Death, a tried and true weapon of choice. Plus, think of all the extra plot you can fit in when someone dies (doesn't have to be anyone important though)!

Good luck everyone!! I hope you finish out the week strong, and I'll be back in a few days to check on you. ;)

LiveJournal Major Notes: Spam counter-attack, RSS feeds again, CSI Deadly Intent contest
[info]theljstaff wrote in [info]news

The empire strikes back

In recent weeks, we've taken huge steps towards blocking spam accounts on LiveJournal. In fact, we've suspended as many as 30,000 accounts in a single day! We've implemented several pre-emptive measures to prevent the creation of spam accounts, and we've honed our detection of suspicious content. Spam bots are a crafty lot, so we'll continue to refine our tactics and keep up the good fight to keep you safe from spam attacks on LiveJournal.

RSS feeds again

If you're addicted to [info]xkcd_rss, [info]icanhaschzbrgr, or other syndicated feeds, we're pleased to report that we've resolved the update error that was mucking up your RSS feeds. While content was being pulled correctly, it wasn't being posted to the feeds themselves. Late last week, we finally nailed down what we hope was the root problem, so content should post properly. We thank you for your patience.

Wii have killer CSI Deadly Intent contests!

[info]c_s_i

If you're a gamer who loves CSI, have Wii got news for you! [info]c_s_i is sponsoring killer contests. Simply post a question to a member of the CSI crew. The winner will get a free copy of CSI: Deadly Intent for Nintendo Wii (with a retail value of $39.99) and get their question answered by a member of the CSI writing team! There's also a fantastic monthly contest. To enter, join [info]c_s_i, play the online version of CSI: Deadly Intent, and respond to a two-part query for a chance to win a Wii! Entries will be judged on composition and originality. Sorry, but you must be a U.S. resident and over 18 years old to participate. Check out the rules here.

Enveloped in postcards

Last week, we asked you to send in postcards to help us decorate our drab concrete walls. Here's a photo of the results so far! Thank you so much and please keep them coming! You can mail them to Frank the Goat, Esq., c/o LiveJournal, Inc., 539 Bryant Street, Suite 210, San Francisco, CA 94107. Be sure to include your username, since we'll be giving ten random users paid account credits.

Photos of the week

If you haven't visited our new LiveJournal photo community, you're in for an amazing visual trip. LiveJournal users from around the world will take you on a scenic journey to everywhere. Post your own pictures or kick back and enjoy at [info]lj_photophile. You can view some of this week's awesome photos after the jump. Please start tagging with geographic location, since we'd like to track all the places around the world represented in this community. Keep on commenting too!

NaNoWriMo Day #2
[info]cherith wrote in [info]creativefantasy
Hey everyone, Day two of NaNo is here already, how are you doing? I'm working on a brand new story (as in I just came up with it on the 30th) and yesterday I had an incredibly tough time getting started. Today was much better, because I'm already starting to get a feel for the characters, I think. Hopefully, you all are getting along much better than I currently am. I do have my wordcount for today, but I'm not exactly happy with it, so I'm wishing better luck on all of you.

So, here's a place to check in, commiserate with your other [info]creativefantasy writers and keep us updated on where you are. Let us know if you need cheering up, or ideas, or just want to complain about your current wordcount. It's NaNo, it's allowed. *grins*

In case you're already having trouble, or need a place to look for ideas I've got two links for you.
1) Write or Die you have to keep writing, or you start losing wordcount. Talk about motivation!

2) Plinky A great new website that gives you a question to answer every day. It's a lot like the LJ writer's block boxes, but with a bigger community, and a ton of different prompts, and the ability to stick pictures in with your answers.

Good luck with Day #2 NaNo'ers.

Braving the Storms - quicksilver_47
[info]quicksilver_47 wrote in [info]write_away

How many times have we, the Filipino people, braved the storms?

In 2006, our country was rendered helpless by the super typhoon Milenyo, and then next, we suffered from the relentless gales of typhoon Reming. Some years later- the year is 2009-, we find ourselves, face to face yet again with another force of nature – the tropical storm, Ondoy, which was, to our dismay, followed closely by typhoon Pepeng.

Many of our brothers and sisters, both the rich and the poor, found that they could not escape Ondoy’s and Pepeng’s merciless grasp. For days, our streets were flooded with black, murky and muddy water. There were not enough life boats, and the rescue teams lacked valuable man power. Supplies and rations were fast disappearing. The prospect of a better tomorrow seemed bleak to some, pointless to others, and hopeless to the majority. Lives were shattered, and the once seemingly solid futures were questioned.

The Philippines was drowning.

This was Written from the Stomach - quicksilver_47
[info]quicksilver_47 wrote in [info]write_away

THIS WAS WRITTEN FROM THE STOMACH

I was born hungry. I was born in a shack, cold and damp. I was born right into the giant grasp of poverty; of hunger. When, like so many of the children who were born at the exact second I was, I cried for milk, my mother, like any mother, took me in her arms, and rocked me, slowly, gently. She held me close, and I could feel her rough hands, that were shaking from labor, run across my face, in an attempt to soothe me. But I was hungry. I was desperately hungry. And so, no matter what comfort my mother offered, I simply cried louder. My lungs were pierced with air that carried the fetid scent of blood, sweat, trash, and rat urine. My stomach, little as it was, shouted, demanded that I be fed; demanded that warm, smooth milk enter my body.

And then my mother started crying.

The Painter - quicksilver_47
[info]quicksilver_47 wrote in [info]write_away

The Painter

They have asked me to do that which I consider as impossible; improbable.

Ah! These foolish men! They think that to wield the brush is an exact art, one governed by certain rules of science. No. They are wrong; for to wield a tool as noble as the brush is to master the ability of one’s hands. You must be calm. Shaking hands and trembling fingers will only ruin your masterpiece. You must exude an aura of confidence. You must be able to breathe life into the colors that you have befriended, must let them glide across your canvass freely.

These men, they also think that I know everything in the field of the arts. They are mistaken. For I only know that when you paint, your mind must not be restricted, must not be caged. I only know that if you let Blue streak out smoothly, just as the sky above you does, but do not forget that it must too, be savage, inconsistent, just as the sea before you is, then you will achieve realism. And if you let Red sound his war drums in the morning, then in the evening, lay him to rest; let him speak of love and passion, you will understand the magnitude of his voice. I only know that each color, each hue and shade is different; utterly unique, and that you must handle each one with reverence, and with respect.

But, ah, truly they have asked me to do that which I consider impossible; improbable.
